April 2023: Coming Soon! Porn-Critical Sex Education Curriculum

Culture Reframed is the premier science-based, global organization working to stop the emotional, behavioral, and sexual harms of pornography to children and youth. Join our online community to receive updates on our work, announcements of upcoming events, and the latest news related to pornography and youth.

At Culture Reframed, we advocate for the safety and well-being of children and teens in the face of the pornography industry. This month’s newsletter examines harmful cultural trends — from sexting to the global sex trade — that are influenced and perpetuated by the industry. We explore how our culture allows them to continue and what we can do to change the narrative. It starts with building awareness of these issues and their implications.

Children and teens are especially vulnerable to the prevalence of our culture’s hypersexualized media and pornography. In the coming weeks, we will introduce our new, porn-critical sexual education curriculum that helps students understand how the messages in porn can shape their attitudes and behaviors. Read more about the curriculum below and sign up here to be notified when it is available.

What Parents Need to Know About Sexting

Studies show that one in seven teens sends sexts, and one in four receives them. Despite how normalized sexting has become, teens are often unaware of the serious consequences that sexting poses. In this article, the Culture Reframed team explores how sexting became so popular, discusses the harm these actions can cause, and offers advice on how to address the dangers of sexting with young people.

COMING SOON: Porn-Critical Sex Education Curriculum

Without sex education, young people will learn from the resources that are available to them, including pornography — a source unlikely to provide accurate or helpful information. In fact, it is often very harmful. To address this need and the lack of comprehensive, developmentally-appropriate sex education, Culture Reframed developed a porn-critical sex education curriculum. Learn more about the curriculum, which will be available in the coming weeks, here.

The Global Sex Trade is a Harmful Cultural Practice

At Culture Reframed’s virtual conference in December, “Pornography & Prostitution: Connecting the Dots,” Taina Bien-Aimé, Executive Director of the Coalition Against Trafficking in Women, spoke about cultural influences on the global sex trade. She explored how language shapes our views on violence against women and girls and shared ideas about how to eradicate the sex trade and end commercial sexual exploitation.
