From Adverse Childhood Experiences to Juvenile Sexual Offenders: Social and Cultural Factors, Impulsive Personality and Risk Behaviors.

Abstract

One of the important factors that impact adolescents become juvenile sexual offender is Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). This research aims to explore the factors that lead adolescents who have ACEs to become juvenile sexual violence. This is qualitative research with 16 participants of juvenile sexual offenders and parents as additional participants. Data collected by interviewing and focus group discussions. Data analysis by thematic analysis. Result shows that the reasons adolescents become juvenile sexual offenders are social and cultural factors, impulsive personality, and risk behaviours. Implications of this research are that prevention and treatment of juvenile sexual offenders.

Relevance

This study of juvenile sexual offenders in Indonesia found the habitually viewing pornography “contributed to the development of juvenile sexual offending…Exposure to pornographic material fostered intense sexual fantasies among juvenile sexual offenders, which in turn motivated them to engage in sexual intercourse or commit sexual harassment as a means of satisfying their sexual urges following exposure to pornography.”
